Improvements - phase one

From January to May 2011 this involved; expanding the dog-free area, improving the entrance from Fortune Green Road, re-siting some bins and benches, resurfacing the paths, planting 10,000 Daffodils in the southern half of the Green and renovating the planting, and creating a new double border either side of the path by Alfred Court.

The double border planting was in a 'new perennial' style of robust, low-maintenance herbaceous summer flowering plants, including nectar-rich flowers attractive to insects and bees.  There is a mix of structural plants: Sedum, Phlomis, Veronia crinita; and graceful grasses: Miscanthus, Panicum, Calamagrostis.  There are accompanying perrenials: Aster, Hemerocallis, Salvia; and ground cover plants: Geranium, Nepeta, Calamintha.

In the beds closest to the entrance areas are perenials that look their best in spring: Epimedium, Euphoria, Hellebores.  In amongst these perennials you'll see shrubs: Hamamelis, Hydrangea, Viburnum that add interest to the beds throughout the year.  Plus there are bulbs for early spring colour.  At the back of the bed is a mixed native hedge: Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Virburnum to encourage wildlife.

Improvements - phase two

Before re-turfing
From January to May 2013, FoFG excavated the remains of a communal WW2 bomb shelter then re-turfed the upper quadrant and in one corner created a small children's landscaped area.  FoFG also installed some popular exercise equipment and play/activity markings.
